CARACTERIZAÇÃO DOS ASPECTOS E IMPACTOS ECONÔMICOS, SOCIAIS E AMBIENTAIS DO SETOR SUCROALCOOLEIRO PAULISTA. AgEcon
Alvarenga, Rafael Pazeto; Queiroz, Timoteo Ramos.

Horizontal Evaluation: Stimulating social learning among peers AgEcon
Thiele, Graham; Devaux, Andre; Velasco, Claudio; Manrique, Kurt.
Horizontal evaluation is a flexible evaluation method that combines self-assessment and external review by peers. We have developed and applied this method for use within an Andean regional network that develops new methodologies for research and development (R&D). The involvement of peers neutralizes the lopsided power relations that prevail in traditional external evaluations, creating a more favourable atmosphere for learning and improvement. The central element of a horizontal evaluation is a workshop that brings together a group of ‘local participants’ who are developing a new R&D methodology and a group of ‘visitors’ or ‘peers’ who are also interested in the methodology. The workshop combines presentations about the methodology with field...

The problem of discards in fisheries ArchiMer
Morizur, Yvon; Caillart, B; Tingley, D.
Introduction : It is now clear that the world's fishery resources are being subjected to exploitation at or above their capacity to produce maximum sustainable yields. At the same time as these trends are being felt, there is a very large wastage of fishery resources from discarding unwanted catches at sea. At the end of each fishing operation a part of the catch is often returned to the sea after sorting by the fishermen. A 1994 FAO report provided an estimate of global discards in commercial fisheries of 27 millions of tons per year compared to 50 million tons of direct human consumption. A more recent FAO document estimated that discards were in the order of 20 million tons in 1997. The majority of the world's fisheries are multi-species in nature and...

Understanding rural life - assessing the social dimensions when encouraging land-use changes in rural areas AgEcon
Race, Digby; Farquharson, Robert J.; Birckhead, Jim; Vernon, Don; Bathgate, Andrew D..
Meshed with the bio-physical and economic dimensions of rural land-use is a social dimension. Understanding the social and economic dimension of rural communities is critical if agencies are to develop effective policies and programs to improve natural resource outcomes. In this paper, we draw on research of the Boorowa community, located in the south-west slopes of New South Wales, to help understand how social changes in rural communities are impacting natural resource management in the Boorowa district. This included: • *Identifying the catalysts for changing land-use in the Boorowa catchment, • *Presenting an effective and efficient methodology for assessing the social and economic impacts of changes in land use at the catchment scale, • *Identifying...

Upland crop technologies in Cambodia: economic evaluations and some adoption issues AgEcon
Farquharson, Robert J.; Scott, J. Fiona; Sareth, Chea.
Agricultural research and development (R&D) has being conducted in the upland districts of Cambodia to develop new farming systems and crop management technologies. Levels of farm income in these areas are relatively low due to small farm sizes and low crop productivity. Work is also planned to encourage the process of adoption of these technologies, and here we investigate how this process can be facilitated. A literature review identifies two important technology characteristics, ‘relative advantage’ and ‘trialability’, for successful adoption. Minimum or target rates of return on investment in new technologies are discussed as a means of investigating how much improvement in relative advantage might be enough to encourage successful adoption of the...

USE OF CATCHMENT SPECIFIC SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC INFORMATION IN MANAGING NATURAL RESOURCES AgEcon
Ahmed, Mehnaz; Jacobs, Brent; Tracey, Jacqueline.
Catchment specific economic and social information assists catchment management authorities in natural resource planning and decision making. It gives a context to the natural resource management (NRM) planning and decision making by providing an understanding of the economic and social characteristics in a region and tracks economic and social changes overtime. It also enables analysis of factors that influence a community’s competence in undertaking NRM activities. Catchment specific economic and social data is available from the Australian Bureau of Statistics but there are gaps in the availability of this data that may hinder NRM planning and decision making. The aim of this paper is two fold: firstly, it provides a snapshot of the economic and social...

VALUE OF SOCIAL CAPITAL TO MID-SIZED NORTHERN PLAINS FARMS AgEcon
Gustafson, Cole R..
As farms increase in size, operators face the decision of remaining loyal to local merchants or obtaining volume discounts from distant input suppliers. When farmers bypass local merchants and buy inputs in volume, they often realize price discounts but forego many services including credit forebearance. When farmers buy locally, they pay higher prices, which decreases profits and increases financial risk, but generates social capital which can be drawn upon during periods of economic adversity. A theoretical model of farm financial risk evaluates borrower behavior in light of cash flow constraints, volume discounts, and social capital. Results delineate financial risks involved and value of social capital.

VALUE OF SOCIAL CAPITAL TO MID-SIZED NORTHERN PLAINS FARMS AgEcon
Gustafson, Cole R..
As farms increase in size, operators often face the difficult decision of remaining loyal to local merchants or obtaining volume discounts from more distant input suppliers. When farmers bypass local merchants and buy inputs in volume from a wholesaler, they often realize a price discount but forego many services including credit forebearance. In essence, when farmers buy locally, they pay higher prices, which decreases profits and increases financial risk, but generates social capital which can be drawn upon during periods of economic adversity later in the form of credit forebearance. A theoretical model of farm financial risk evaluates borrower behavior in light of cash flow constraints, volume discounts, and social capital. Monte-carlo simulation...
